Many U.S.  refinery flare gas systems are effected by environmental regulations that limit hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content in fuel gases sent to combustion devices. The New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for Petroleum Refineries, Subparts J and Ja, 40 C.F.R. 60.100 limit the permissible H2S in gas burned in a flare to 160 parts per million (ppm) on a rolling three-hour average.

The direct injection of chemical H2S scavengers into flare gas systems can potentially save millions of dollars for refineries or other facilities that might exceed these H2S limits during a planned shutdown or turnaround, or that excedd the 160-ppm limitation internittently due to unit upsets or other causes. This process allows uninterreupted plant operations and helps to ensure environmental compliance, with minimal capital expenditures.
