Building a “New Normal”

Historically, our industry has been driven by a series of inflection points tore-examine best practices, technologies, or philosophies on how we conduct our business. The most notable of these have often been associated with tragedies such as the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea and, most recently, the Macondo disaster in the US Gulf of Mexico. Piper Alpha led to a wide-scale focus on health, safety, and the environment (HSE), fundamentally changing the way companies viewed safety, and led to orders of magnitude improvement in HSE practices. While the full impact of Macondo is only now being fully understood, it is clear that we will see a similar effect on the way we handle quality, competency, safety critical systems, and contingency planning.

In both of the incidents, external pressure precipitated the cultural or technical shift to a new operating norm, while the capabilities and technology for bridging the gap were available. Until we consider risk management and operational sustainability as business drivers and an equal part of our mission, we will never make the paradigm shift from a reactive to a proactive business model.

New Baker Hughes Water Treatment Improves Efficiency, Reduces Costs

?HOUSTON, TEXAS – Oct. 31, 2011 – A new Baker Hughes water treatment technology cost-effectively removes suspended solids and heavy metals without chemicals and treats 100% of flowback and produced water for reuse.

The H2prO™ water treatment service uses an exclusive electrocoagulation technology that reliably eliminates contaminants without chemicals and reduces costly non-productive time. The service combines high mobility and proven technology to conserve freshwater use; reduces transportation and disposal costs and complies with all regulatory requirements.

“This service addresses water supply limitations and enhances the pace of our customers’ pressure pumping operations,” says Tom Whalen, Baker Hughes’ Vice President of Water Management. “We improve overall efficiency of operations and reduce total water cost because this is part of a fully integrated process from pressure pumping to water treatment and disposal.”

Digital oilfield system connects personnel through smartphones, touch pads

DOFERO Consultancy has launched an interface that provides access to the oilfield, on land and offshore, through smartphones and touch pads in real time.
DOFERO’s Viz-iSeries and latest Viz-iHMI2100 application for remote access of data connects field personnel with their supervisors, subject matter experts and original equipment manufacturers to help solve issues without the cost of traveling or nonproductive time. The system provides the medium for real-time maintenance and trouble shooting and real-time training.
“The goal is to manage the asset from start to finish,” Darrell Fanguy, co-owner and executive VP of sales and marketing for DOFERO, said at the product launch in Houston on 22 March. The Viz-iSeries and latest Viz-iHMI2100 includes multiple cameras for rig sites, a means of face-to-face communication and application for an early detection system for equipment failure. “This is nothing new; this is all proven technology,” he added.
DOFERO’s Viz iSeries includes:

Ensco orders sixth ultra-deepwater drillship to meet customer demands

Responding to the high level of customer demand driven by a trend of successful offshore discoveries, Ensco has ordered an advanced-capability, ultra-deepwater drillship to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, South Korea.


The vessel, ENSCO DS-8, will be the sixth Samsung DP3 drillship in the Ensco fleet.  It is scheduled for delivery in the Q3 2014. The contract also includes options for two additional drillships of the same design.


Consistent with the previous five Samsung ultra-deepwater drillships ordered since 2007, the new unit will have advanced capabilities to meet the demands of ultra-deepwater drilling in water depths up to 12,000 ft and a total vertical drilling depth of 40,000 ft. New features on ENSCO DS-8 include retractable thrusters, enhanced safety and environmental features, improved dynamic positioning capabilities and advanced drilling and completion functionality including below-main-deck riser storage, triple fluid systems, offline conditioning capability and enhanced client and third-party facilities.


“An ongoing trend of new deepwater oil and gas discoveries around the globe is creating a high demand for equipment capable of tapping those resources,” Ensco Chairman, President and CEO Dan Rabun, said.


The new drillship is based on the proprietary Samsung GF12000 hull design measuring 755 ft in length and 125 ft in width. It will offer a payload in excess of 22,000 tons and a 1,250-ton hoisting system. The rig’s design and capabilities include features that increase operating efficiency, such as enhanced and redundant offline tubular stand building features and a 165-ton active heave compensating construction crane, allowing for the deployment of subsea production equipment without interference with ongoing drilling operations.


The rig will be equipped with dynamic positioning in compliance with DPS-3 certification; six-5.5 megawatt thrusters for enhanced station-keeping; expanded drilling fluids capacity; a 15,000-psi subsea well control system with six rams, upgradable to seven rams and/or a second BOP stack; burner boom for well testing; and living quarters for up to 200 personnel.


“This addition to our fleet is in keeping with our strategy of standardization, which streamlines construction, operations, inventory management, training, regulatory compliance, repairs and maintenance,” Mr Rabun said.


Ensco’s three active DP3 drillships are currently contracted into 2016 in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil and West Africa. A fourth, ENSCO DS-6, is undergoing pre-commissioning modifications in preparation for its first well assignment under a five-year contract with BP. ENSCO DS-7 is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2013.
